Infections are caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi that can be passed from one person to another. In a dental clinic, one of the highest risks of serious infection is through contact with dental instruments that have not been properly sterilised.
Some examples of infections are HIV, Hepatitis B and C. Our clinic’s stringent infection control plays an important role in controlling the spread of infections from one person to another.
WHO IS AT RISK
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) oversees the dental practice accreditation process. This ensures the facility and the standards followed by a dental practice are independently assessed to ensure they meet relevant quality and safety standards. Dental Practice’s that have not been accredited, have no independent assessment or recognition that they meet standards.
INFECTION CONTROL IS OUR HIGH PRIORITY
At Lydiard Street Dental Clinic, we believe every person has the right to receive safe and quality healthcare. That is why we have made no comprises in implementing an infection control system that is compliant with standards set by the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS). Meeting these standards in infection prevention and control is an important part of our quality and safety philosophy in delivering our services.
OUR INITIATIVE IN CONTROLLING INFECTIONS
Our Infection control standards are compliant with the Australian Dental Associations guidelines (ADA) and the NSQHS standards. We were accredited not long after accreditation for dental practices was first introduced by the Federal Government. It was not a difficult process for us as we already met the relevant standards. It was a matter of being independently assessed by a third party to confirm we complied with standards.
The following are some of the policies we have adopted to ensure we offer our patients the highest level of safety possible:
· All members of our clinical team are trained and assessed to ensure each member is fully compliant with our procedures in infection control.
· Establishment of a Quality and Safety Committee to oversee, manage and control quality and safety throughout the clinic.
· Monitoring of infection control on a daily basis to ensure compliance with standards.
· Sterilising of clinical instruments is performed ONLY by staff that have passed Lydiard Street Dental Clinic’s stringent assessments on the sterilisation of used clinical instruments.
STAFF IMMUNITY AND AUDITS
We conduct internal audits in accordance with the accreditation requirements. All our clinical staff are screened for compliance with our immunisation requirements. This is to ensure our staff are not a risk to patients, as it protects them from contracting and passing contagious infections on to others.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Use the alcohol based hand rub when entering our clinic, returning from the toilets, and also when leaving the clinic.
Ensure your mouth and nose are covered when coughing or sneezing. If you do not have a tissue, sneezing into your elbow will help prevent the spread of germs.
